Windy Today, Warmer and Wetter Days Ahead
April 29th, 2010 by BurtonWill we see some sun today? The answer is, well, blowing in the wind!
Strong southerly winds have gust between 25 to 35 miles per hour already this morning, increasing the moisture levels but also helping to stir and break up the low morning clouds to reveal a brighter afternoon. A WIND ADVISORY is in effect for parts of the area until midnight. Today’s mid 80s may feel like 90 under the sun thanks to the higher humidity.
The clouds come back tonight and, after midnight, an overcast sky develops with a 30% chance for drizzle to light rain. A 30% chance continues during the day Friday with potential for showers and isolated storms. Futurecast depicts the dryline nearing I-35 midday with some clearing and rapid warming by afternoon, then a cold front sweeps in after dark. Some off and on rain will continue into early Saturday (30% chance) before tapering Sunday (20% chance.)
Overall, less than half an inch of rain is expected in the next five days for most areas. This morning’s computer models suggest heavier totals (nearing one inch) in the Waco area, but mostly east of I-35. This could all change! Be sure to check back here and on the 8-day forecast for updates.
Gulf Oil Disaster… The slick continues to spread, as seen in this new satellite photo from NASA, now less than 20 miles from the shore. Southerly winds are returning to the northern Gulf and will likely push the oil right into some of the protected marshes and wildlife preserves across coastal Louisiana soon enough, though a burn off may help reduce some of the effect. Incredibly sad, especially given the update that now 5,000 BARRELS are supposedly pumping into the ocean per day — that’s four times greater than the original estimate.
Solar Eruption… NASA’s new Solar Dynamics Observatory topped itself, capturing exhilirating pictures of the sun right as a massive eruption took place last week. Be sure to watch the incredible false-color movie!
