Too Cool for Internet Explorer

Cool, Breezy End to 2008

December 31st, 2008 by Burton

A cold front arrived overnight so plan on some sleeves, especially for tonight’s celebrations!

We’ll be in the 50s most of the day as north winds gust upwards of 20mph — a pollen threat for allergy suffers. Anticipate high mountain cedar counts today.

Mostly sunny skies turn cloudy again late tonight, with temps dropping into the 40s and 30s by sunrise on New Year’s Day, some north and west of Austin may even get a light freeze. Expect a cloudy Thursday with a bit of drizzle/light rain at times and high temps simply in the 50s.

A cameo appearance of high pressure overhead combines with warmer south winds to provide 70s Friday and Saturday ahead of our next big front. We’re planning on 50s to near 60 Sunday. Then our best widespread rain chance in weeks arrives Monday at 40%. Showers and even severe storms will be possible as a disturbance crosses the southwest. Cooler air will follow on Tuesday, with freezing temps possible again by next Wednesday.

As always, you’ll find all the details on the 8-day forecast.

Fireworks Discouraged… In light of our exceptional drought and fourth driest year in Austin history, we suggest holding back from any fireworks this year. Burn bans are in effect across Central Texas.

Warmer Today, Chilly Tomorrow

December 30th, 2008 by Burton

If you enjoyed yesterday, I think you’ll love today. Primarily sunny skies will be marred only by scattered high clouds rolling in from Mexico. We’re calling for mid 70s by 3pm! Colder 50s return tomorrow, though, thanks to another cold blast from the north.

Coldest morning lows:

25 Manor
27 ABIA
28 Elgin & Rosanky
30 Buda

Our winds will do an about-face tomorrow as the next cold front sweeps through the Lone Star State, becoming northerly before sunrise Wednesday in the Austin area. Wind speeds near 20 to possibly 25mph will follow, making it a chilly day for all with high temps struggling to get to 60.

Clouds will fill our Thursday skies as another system sweeps across the country, offering a 30% chance for showers and a few storms Thursday night into Friday with a fairly weak cold front. Temps will rebound to near 70 as soon as Saturday.

By Sunday night, another disturbance in the jet stream will kick a cold front towards Texas with potential for Monday rain. Check the 8-day forecast for all the details.

Fireworks Discouraged… In light of our exceptional drought and fourth driest year in Austin history, we suggest holding back from any fireworks this year. Burn bans are in effect across Central Texas.

Conjunction in Progress… Mercury and Jupiter appear to be right next to each other in tonight’s skies. You’ll also see bright Venus hanging over the beautiful crescent moon, as seen in this star chart from spaceweather.com. Look southwest tonight just after sunset.
