Clouds and Warmth Abound

March 27th, 2008 by Burton

Another muggy, warm morning goes sunny and hot for the afternoon, with high temps in the mid 80s along I-35 and some possible low 90s in the Hill Country! A weak cold front approaches tomorrow, but only delivers a bit of relief…

Hang on! Blustery south winds continue to howl across Texas at 10 to 20mph, with gusts near 30mph, keeping humidity levels and the fire threat high yet again today.

Futurecast indicates partly cloudy skies before noon today, allowing for a quick rise in temps. Skies cloud up again tonight and, with that cold front arriving from the north tomorrow, may become drizzly to showery at times, especially by Friday evening. An overall 20% rain chance Friday rises slightly to 30% for Saturday as the front stalls out nearby then begins to surge northward again. We’re still uncertain as to where the front will end up, which could make a notable difference in the rain and temp part of our forecast. By tomorrow morning, we’ll have much a better idea.

Friday skies will be much cloudier, with highs temps mostly in the 70s. Behind the front, we’ll find temps a few degrees lower for Saturday. Then, on Sunday, expect a bit more sunshine and highs again at or just above 80 degrees.

The “zonal” or flat jet stream crossing mostly the northern third of our nation this week will again begin to buckle. A low amplitude trough developing in the Pacific Northwest will move across the Rockies this weekend then drop a cold front our way for Monday. It offers our next best chance for stormy weather across Central Texas. Stay tuned for updates here and on the 8-day forecast.

Warm Today, Warmer Tomorrow

March 26th, 2008 by Burton

Thanks to strong winds from the Gulf of Mexico, moisture returned with a vengeance, providing more cloudcover and slightly less comfort here the next few days. And how about those temps! Some in Texas will push 90 tomorrow. Too soon!

We wake to overcast skies and temps in the warm low 60s, with winds near 10 to 20mph from the south. Temps won’t budge much while the clouds linger this morning but, by lunch, will begin a quick rise up to the low 80s as sunshine beams down.

After a partly cloudy evening, Futurecast indicates a return of the overcast after midnight tonight followed by a repeat performance of midday clearing Thursday, likely the hottest day of the week for many with mid to upper 80s. Further south on I-35 it’ll be closer to 90.

Then a weak cold front nears from the north on Friday and might strike up a few spotty showers and storms as it stalls out, lingering nearby on Saturday. It’s still iffy right now due to a flat flow of the jet stream, which is well to our north. Rain chances rise to 30% Saturday and Sunday for brief, spotty showers and storms. Another cold front approaches with a slightly better outlook for storms come Monday.

Temps appear slightly above the March average along with some rain chances pretty much every day next week. Stay tuned for updates on the 8-day forecast.
