Early Storms, A Windy Day

January 31st, 2008 by Burton

Our latest cold front to move into Texas struck up a line of storms around 3am just west of I-35, delivering about a quarter of an inch of rain along with rumbles of thunder across parts of the area for the morning commute. Rain’s out and wind’s now the word for the day…setting the stage for a widespread freeze tonight.

Heaviest 24 hour rain totals:

0.28″ Bastrop
0.19″ Cedar Park
0.18″ Fort Hood
0.18″ Waco
0.17″ Smithville
0.17″ Thorndale
0.16″ Rosanky
0.15″ Florence
0.14″ Round Rock

As northwesterly winds howl in at 20 to 30mph by midday, some gusts could possibly reach 40 to 50mph. A Wind Advisory and Red Flag (Fire) Warning are in effect for Central Texas from 9am through sunset.

For our area, it’s all about the winds while in North Texas, along the path of an upper-air disturbance, there’s snow this morning.

They’ll calm tonight, setting the stage for a light areawide freeze by sunrise Friday. We’re in for lots of sun on the first of Feb ’08, quickly warming the air up to low and mid 60s by mid-afternoon. Southeast winds resume within 24 hours, adding some moisture back into our atmosphere with breezes up to 15mph .

Dare I call it a weather ‘touchdown’ for Superbowl Weekend?? It’ll seem like it, thanks to spring-like temps in the low to mid 70s. Clouds will thicken in our skies from Groundhog Day Saturday to Superbowl Sunday as another weaker Pacific cold front moves through, but that shouldn’t stop any of the fun nor bring much of a temp change.

Prognostications… So, will Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow this year or will the U.S. endure six more weeks of winter? Looks a couple more rounds of cold especially for the northern half of the nation into the new month, though warmth isn’t that far off for Texas! Slightly warmer-than-average conditions look to be right around the corner.

Check out the 8-day forecast for specifics on a cold front scheduled for early next week.

Enjoy your Thursday.
