Morning clouds will give way to plenty of sunshine this morning, though spotty storms aren’t too far away and may have more luck getting here through the end of the week. But will we need the umbrellas for the holiday weekend or will the sun be shining? We’ve got your forecast…
Under mostly clear skies for most of the night, a nearly full moon shone brightly across our area while temps dropped to a low of 74 at Camp Mabry, with a few in the upper 60s at sunrise. At that time, the air cooled to its dew point (the point of condensation,) resulting in cloudy skies for some. Look for a mix of sun and clouds through lunch, though less sun can be expected this afternoon as storms try to billow our way.
There’s a weak cold front on the Futurecast nearing from the north, possibly providing a brief shift of northerly winds Thursday to Friday though with little temp change. But the bigger feature to watch can be see on water vapor imagery this morning…a low-pressure disturbance in our atmosphere aloft, now spinning over Dallas, that was once over the Eastern Gulf late last week. This disturbance provides one of three key ingredients required for rain: uplift. We already have generous amounts of Gulf moisture and growing instability with the heat of each day, and as this upper-low bobbles further west it looks like storms will result. We’ve raised the chance to 50% for Thursday and Friday.
Holiday Weekend and the Longhorns… Although the rain chances will begin to taper this holiday weekend ahead, they won’t drop completely. We expect at least some spotty afternoon to early evening storms with the heat of the day–the chance is 30% Saturday and Sunday. At 6pm Saturday, Texas takes on Arkansas State. We expect a 20% chance for a brief storm during the game with kickoff temps near 90 lowering to the mid 80s by fourth quarter.
Warm Start to September… The jet stream animation shows how two to three cells of high pressure will block many of the weather features from moving much across our state. One of the good benefits of all this? Highs temps will only be in the low 90s, at best, into early next week.
Labor Day Holiday… As of today, Monday’s forecast looks drier with only a 20% chance for showers. We’ll shoot for low 90s, with a heat index forecast in the mid to upper 90s.
Enjoy your Wednesday.
